Parenting Programs

Parenting

Studies conducted by the Queen Rania Family & Child Center (QRFCC) in partnership with other local organizations have shown that child abuse is a prevalent phenomenon in the Jabal Al Nasser area.  This phenomenon can be attributed to various risk factors - the main being poverty, unemployment, low educational levels, and large family size.  The area is highly populated, and due to high birth rates, the average family is large in size, which makes parenting an even more challenging task.

According to a study conducted by UNICEF in 2007, parents in Jordan frequently use violence - both verbal and physical, as methods of disciplining their children. This includes methods which can sometimes be quite severe, such as beating, using belts, shoes or other objects, as well as insults, shouting, and name calling. The Community usually views these as acceptable methods of discipline, even though they are obviously violating the child’s right to protection. Using these abusive practices for disciplining creates violent behavior in children themselves and perpetuates the use of abuse in future generations.

Additionally, through its work over the years with parents in the area, QRFCC has witnessed the lack of awareness that parents have regarding their children’s development, their right to protection and alternative methods for discipline beyond physically and verbally abusive methods. They also do not realize the impact that these methods have on the development of the child, which can bring about a child with poor communication skills, low self esteem, poor educational achievement, and depression. 

As mentioned previously, Eastern Amman is an area where support services for families and parents in need of intervention are almost nonexistent. This means that parents usually have nowhere to turn to when in need of help, which increases their frustration and consequently increases the vulnerability of their children, putting them at a higher risk for violence.
 
There is a palpable need to raise the levels of awareness and parenting skills in the area, as well as to provide families with support services. Doing so strengthens interaction between children and families and will foster a healthy and safe environment for cognitive, emotional and physical development, ultimately resulting in lower rates of child abuse.

Through its Parenting Unit, QRFCC complements its prevention activities through training programs that promote improved child-rearing practices and positive family dynamics. These parenting programs are modeled around culturally appropriate practices rooted in local community needs and challenges.  All activities are governed by international best practices in early childhood education and child safety.

Objectives:

  • To  increase the knowledge of parents on child rights and child development
  • To change the attitude and perception of parents regarding child development, child rights and child protection
  • To enhance the capacity of parents regarding positive parenting and developmentally appropriate disciplinary practices
  • To provide needy families with individualized psychosocial services, thus supporting the learning provided through parenting programs
  • To refer vulnerable parents and families in Eastern Amman to programs and services provided by JRF and/or other local/national organizations

Training programs for parents and primary caregivers conducted by the Parenting Unit include: Entering the World of Early Childhood which focuses on understanding and handling children (birth to 8 years of age), Dealing with Our Adolescent Children, New-Born Children, Behavior Modification and Developmentally Appropriate Disciplinary Measures, and Concepts of Child Safety.
